Following the government’s recent strategy of boosting the country’s agricultural system and ensuring that the food products consumed in Nigeria are produced locally, there has been an effective ban on the importation of foreign rice into the country for quite some time now.
This approach by the Muhammadu Buhari administration, which has focused on making local rice available for consumption by all citizens of the country as well as exportation to other countries, could be credited as one of the president’s recent great accomplishments.
However, the recent development on the ground according to Sahara Reporters news media has reported how the House of Representatives has just passed a bill that will automatically grant life imprisonment to any offender who is caught importing foreign rice into the country.
Hours after this development took place, the prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has taken to her official Twitter handle to fume and condemn the bill as she questions why the bill should contain life imprisonment for any of its offenders. Aisha further suggested that it is time to elect people who will run in 2023 for the legislative arm.
