Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Nigerian Catholic missionary priest serving in Malawi, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission to demand that party candidates running for various positions be included on the ballots.

Fr. Kelvin argued in a letter published on his verified Facebook page that Nigerians don’t vote for political parties; rather, they vote for the personalities of the various candidates, emphasizing that the ballot papers shouldn’t only include the party logo.

The well-known priest shared a picture of a ballot from Malawi and noted that practically all African nations have both the candidate’s name and face listed on the ballot for various elections.

He wrote, “Dear INEC Nigeria,

“This is how our ballot should read because, in reality, we are choosing the person who will carry out our vice.

The ballot papers for all previous elections held in Nigeria had simply party emblems. However, the person we elect to lead us after the election, not the party we support.

“On their vote papers, almost all African nations include the candidate’s name, face, and running mate as well as the party’s emblem. Do this for Nigerians, please.
