Eight persons were arrested in the South-East for destroying EEDC facilities.

Emeka Ezeh, EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, confirmed the arrests and blamed vandalism for network failures.

Ezeh said Thursday that vandalism has hurt the company’s capacity to serve clients.

He recognized that most arrests were conducted by vigilante groups, but he commended the help of stakeholders and vigilante groups in halting the trend.

He attributed the adjustment to discussions with stakeholders about protecting electrical equipment from vandalism.

Nonso Sunday Nwajonta, a suspected vandal, was detained over the weekend by youths in Ulakwo village, Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, according to Ezeh (cables).

Ifeanyi Onwe and Anthony Oselebe were arrested by Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) security for vandalizing an EEDC substation along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway beside Pioneer Students Hostel.

“Earlier this month in Uzuakoli, Abia State, vandals assaulted the EEDC Ngwu relief distribution substation and stole the upriser cable, but a vigilante group apprehended one of the thieves, Henry Nwachukwu, while three of his companions fled. Police are trying to catch the fugitives.

Kingsley Uko Agwu and Ebere Ofia Uchendu were detained in Eziafor, Abia State, while vandalizing EEDC property.
