Adegboruwa demands an investigation into Inibehe Effiong’s mistreatment

Senior Nigerian lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has demanded an investigation into claims that Uyo Correctional Center guards mistreated human rights advocate and lawyer Inibehe Effiong.

Adegboruwa urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to “grant all residents the opportunity for the expression and enforcement of their fundamental rights” in a statement released on Friday.

The following was stated in the statement: “On July 26, 2022, the news of Mr. Inibehe Effiong’s alleged conviction for alleged contempt of court by the Honourable Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State stunned the entire nation.

He was then sent to the Ikot-Ekpene Correctional Center, where he was remanded. This occurred during the yearly long court vacation in Nigeria, which hampered efforts to obtain legal relief for him right away.

For those who have followed Mr. Inibehe Effiong’s actions, he has led the charge in Akwa Ibom, his home State, in the fight for transparency and good governance. He has also consistently opposed corruption and corrupt practices, particularly by Akwa Ibom State government officials.

His court case is a result of Mr. Inibehe Effiong’s tireless efforts to purge Akwa Ibom State of all dictatorship and impunity. He agreed to represent a blogger in a libel case brought by the state governor over allegations of corruption in relation to election issues.

In order to benefit from first-hand knowledge of the official account of the events of that day, I have waited to be able to view the record of the Akwa Ibom State High Court’s proceedings from July 27, 2022, when Mr. Inibehe Effiong was found guilty.

However, this has not been made available. In light of what has been published thus far, I personally worry that the legal practitioner’s legitimate professional assignment to prosecute or defend any case on behalf of the client will result in their conviction.
