The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare, has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities to make compromises, so as to resolve the current nationwide strike by varsity lecturers.
Dare placed the call while speaking with a National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) group in Abuja.
He claimed that the country’s graduates were losing credibility as a result of the protracted lecturers’ strike.
Therefore, he urged them to work with the Federal Government to find a common ground in order to end the current trade dispute quickly.
The Minister added that the strike, which had been in effect for five months, had put children and parents through unfathomable suffering, but that a long-term solution was now in reach thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent intervention.
“It is regrettable that the problem has not been resolved as quickly as anticipated, with the consequent negative impacts on hundreds of thousands of Nigerian students.
Considering the conversations that have been held and the predicament of Nigerian students, he added, “I want to use this meeting to make a strong appeal to ASUU to reach some level of compromise and call off the strike.”
The Minister reaffirmed to the NANS President his dedication to working with ASUU and his colleagues, the Ministers of Labor and Education, to find a fair solution as soon as feasible.

As the Minister of Youth and Sports, I want to make sure that our students quickly return to their campuses, he continued.
As the administration makes concerted attempts to reach a settlement that would result in the reopening of our universities and campuses, I have conducted some conversations behind the scenes and I implore our students to be a little more patient.
In his remarks, Mr. Sunday Asefon, the president of NANS, thanked President Buhari for his intervention but emphasized that the students will only understand it if the strike is called off.
