Nigerian lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong was found guilty of contempt of court and given a one-month prison sentence by Akwa Ibom state chief judge Ekaette Obot.
Justice Obot reportedly issued the directive after accusing Effiong of routinely using abusive language in court, according to sources. According to information obtained by Stechitegist Media, Effiong is Leo Ekpenyong’s defense attorney in the libel claim Governor Udom Emmanuel filed against him for allegedly accusing him of bribing judges in the election petition case resulting from the 2019 Akwa Ibom state governorship election.
The Akwa Ibom State government and the Buhari administration have been threatened with legal action over the unlawful detention of human rights attorney Inibehe Effiong, according to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, or SERAP.
SERAP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting transparency, accountability, and respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria. According to StechiteGist Media, Inibehe Effiong was imprisoned on Wednesday for disrespecting the court.
