A source close to MTN Nigeria has revealed to PUNCH that Nigerian banks have disconnected MTN lines from accessing the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) banking services.
Customers of MTN had earlier during the early hours of Friday complained about the unavailability of the service.
However in a reaction by PUNCH’s source, he revealed that MTN had no hand in cutting off the service as it was primarily at the discretion of the banks.
Explaining further, the source disclosed that the disconnection might be as a result of the reduction in bank’s commission through MTN USSD service from an average of 3.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent .
He said: “Please note that MTN didn’t cut off customers and has no hand in this. This is strictly the banks acting on their own.”
“We woke up this morning to see that MTN customers were cut off from USSD services overnight. This has come as a surprise as there was no formal communication from the banks to their customers prior to their taking this action.”
