Charlbi Dean, the South African actress and model in Triangle of Sadness, died of an unexpected illness on Monday at age 32, Variety learned.
The young actor co-starred in Triangle of Sadness, which won the Palme d’Or in May. The satirical dark comedy, written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben stlund, starring Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson and opens in October in the US and UK.
Dean played Yaya, half of a beautiful pair with Dickinson welcomed on a luxurious yacht for the ultra-rich.
This year’s Toronto and New York film festivals will also screen the film.
Charlbi Dean Kriek, born in Cape Town, signed with a modeling agency at age 12 and debuted in Troye Sivan’s 2010 film Spud. She’s renowned for playing Syonide on Black Lightning since 2018.

In 2008, a car crash injured her wrist, ribs, elbow, and lung.
Luke Volker, her fiance, recently said on Instagram that he “couldn’t be prouder” of Dean’s performance in Triangle of Sadness.
