Wesley Fofana, a center back, has been officially acquired by Chelsea from Leicester City.

The Blues made deals to capture Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella early in the window in order to fill the void left by Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s exits this summer.

Chelsea turned their attention to Fofana after missing out on Jules Kounde and Matthijs de Ligt to Barcelona and Bayern Munich, respectively. Three bids were rejected, but a fourth, understood to be worth £70 million plus an additional £10 million, persuaded Leicester to sell.

Fofana has now agreed to a seven-year contract and joined Thomas Tuchel’s defense this summer after passing a medical exam.

Fofana has now agreed to a seven-year contract and joined Thomas Tuchel’s defense this summer after passing a medical exam.

“I’ve had two pretty significant days recently, and I’m overjoyed. It’s a dream come true for me to have trained with the team this morning. I’m eager to begin playing games for the supporters and the team “said Fofana.

“I’m here to win championships, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. I’m here to carry on the club’s tradition of winning trophies because that’s why I arrived.”

Todd Boehly, chairman of Chelsea, said: “Wesley is a defender who has already distinguished himself in the Premier League at a young age and is incredibly promising. We are thrilled that we were able to add one of Europe’s most promising players to Chelsea and bolster that section of our roster for the current season as well as many more to come.”

If all add-ons are satisfied, Fofana, who would rank as the second-most expensive defender in history, may not be Chelsea’s only acquisition this summer.

Boehly is negotiating the transfer of Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and talks about Ivorian forward Wilfried Zaha with Crystal Palace are also ongoing. Before the transfer window closes, it is also anticipated that many players will leave Stamford Bridge.

Another defender, Josko Gvardiol, who might join in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £77 million, is also a topic of conversation between the Blues and RB Leipzig.
