Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner who won her first global outdoor gold medal in the women’s 5,000m at the World Athletic Championships in Oregon.

Although it is unknown what religion our athlete practices as of today, most believe she is Muslim because two-thirds of the Ethiopian population is Christian and the remaining one-third is Muslim.Tsegay competed for her country at the 2014 World Indoor Championship and won a silver medal in the 1500m run at the World Junior Championship when she was 17 years old.

She has the world’s tenth fastest time in the indoor 800 meters and sixth fastest time in the 10,000 meters as of February 2022.Gudaf is an Ethiopian track and field athlete who competed in the 2016 and 2020 summer Olympic games, winning a bronze medal in the women’s 5000 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In Stockholm, at the age of 17, she set the world’s fastest under-18 indoor 1500-meter time of 4 minutes and 8.47 seconds. She won the World Junior Championship silver medal in Eugene with a time of 4:10.83 against Dawit Seyaun’s time of 4:08.86. Gudaf Tsegay is from Tigray, which is home to an ancient Muslim place of worship.

Gudaf Tsegay won her first global outdoor title in the 5000 meters at Hayward Field during the 2022 World Athletics Championship; a bearded man wearing dark blue shorts and a white patterned shirt unbuttoned below his chest ran onto the field, lifted Tsegay and Lestesenbet Gidey, and was led away from the track after a brief chase.

More than two dozen protestors marched around the Hayward Field concourse with Tigray flags, posters, and shirts reading ‘free Tigray’ and ‘Tigray is a country,’ while chanting words such as ‘end Tigray genocide.’ And there was the man who ran to carry the winner on the track; he mentioned that he was originally from Tigray but now lives in Texas.

Gudaf Tsegay’s Family Information

According to Letsrun, Gudaf was born on January 23, 1997, to her father and mother in Tigray, an Ethiopian region. She is 25 years old. Because of an ongoing civil war in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region between the Tigray Defense Forces and the Ethiopian National Defense Force, which began on November 3, 2020.Tigrayan forces launched an attack on an Ethiopian military base, sparking the conflict.

In response to the attack, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed dispatched troops. More than two million people were forced to flee their homes as a result of the incident, and those who remained were cut off from essential resources such as food and electricity.

She won a gold medal at this year’s Championships but is unable to contact her family to inform them. Because of the conflict, the athlete hasn’t seen her parents in a long time. Following the race, the Tigrai TV account stated that Gidey, who also won a gold medal in the same event, had been unable to communicate with her family for the previous two years.
