Imo Police Arrested Arm Robbers Disguising as Officers

After receiving a distress call from a victim claiming to have seen one of the criminals responsible for stealing his automobile, police were able to apprehend the accused.

Three individuals from a robbery ring that targets innocent bystanders while posing as police officers have been detained by the Imo state police command.

The robbery victim accidentally saw one of the armed robbers who forced him to give up his ash-colored Lexus 330 SUV with registration number RLU 08 AH on July 18 at around 1800 hours along Mbano Street in Aladinma Owerri, Imo State, according to a statement made by CSP Michael Abattam, the state police command’s spokesperson. On July 20, the police received the call from the victim.

Abattam reported that the victim claimed that the accused armed robbers forced him into the booth, took him to a desolate area, confiscated all of his belongings, and then used his cell phone to transfer N100,000 from his bank account to one of their accounts.

Goodness Chinaza’m, a 23-year-old native of Aladinma Owerri, Imo State, was arrested by the team after they immediately leapt into action, entered the place, and seized him. During interrogation, he confessed to robbing the victim and joining a crime gang. The 24-year-old Emeka Orji, commonly known as “COCO,” who resided at the same home, was then ordered to be arrested by police, but Julius Chigozie was able to escape. They both admitted, after further interrogation, to concealing the stolen vehicle at the Rapour Hotel in Amakohia Owerri, Imo State. Nevertheless, the car was returned to the station.

According to the inquiry, the three suspects were residing in an area of Aladinma Owerri when they broke into the apartment of a deceased police officer and stole his uniforms, bulletproof vests, and other belongings. They “began using the same to plunder unsuspecting people,” the complaint added.

Their strategy, according to Abattam, is to impersonate real police officers while obstructing traffic and examining automobiles while donning a stolen outfit.

“When they come across a flashy vehicle, they will stop the driver and request the vehicle’s information. He will be pulled from the car, placed in the booth, and taken to a safe location where the unwitting victim will be robbed. On rare occasions, they are successful in kidnapping the victim for ransom before bad luck results in their capture.

The police spokeswoman added that during the search of the suspects’ residence, police uniforms and protective vests as well as a local double barrel short gun, a jack knife, and were discovered.

CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, psc(+), commended the police for their quick thinking and bravery while admonishing hotel owners to be watchful of guests and vehicles parked on their premises.
