Inibehe Effiong, a well-known human rights attorney, has been demanded to be released right away by Omoyele Sowore. Recall that Effiong was imprisoned for allegedly disobeying the court.
According to a source, Justice Ekaette Obot, the chief judge of Akwa Ibom State, sentenced Effiong to prison on Wednesday for defending a journalist.
According to a source, Justice Ekaette Obot, the chief judge of Akwa Ibom State, sentenced Effiong to prison on Wednesday for defending a journalist. Sowore, the African Action Alliance’s (AAC) presidential candidate, demanded Effiong’s release in a series of tweets sent via his Twitter account.
Effiong said that Justice Obot had sentenced him to a month in Uyo Prison for defending Leo Ekpenyong in a libel case brought by Governor Udom Emmanuel. He claimed that Obot, who had let armed police officers brandishing AK-47 weapons inside the courtroom, had threatened to throw him in jail if he had accused her of prejudice and asked her to step down from the case.
Two attorneys in the court, according to Effiong, appealed to Justice Obot, but the Chief Judge urged that the lawyer from Lagos be sent in jail. Sowore responded to the news on Twitter on Wednesday, calling the lawyer from Abuja’s arrest “despicable.”
However, the candidate for AAC president demanded the human rights attorney’s immediate release. “I’ve learned that a Chief Judge of the High Court in Akwa Ibom recently summarily sentenced rights attorney @InibeheEffiong to a month in jail for carrying out his legal duty by defending a person who supposedly slandered Governor @MrUdomEmmanuel,” he said. This behavior is abhorrent. #FreeInibehe NOW!
