Justice Adenike Coker of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, handed down a life sentence on Thursday, September 22, to former police officer Olalekan Ogunyemi for the murder of Kolade Johnson.

Ogunyemi, a member of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad of the Nigerian police, shot Johnson in the lower abdomen on March 31, 2019, at a viewing center in Mangoro, Ikeja, Lagos.

The victim, 35 years old, was shot while attending an English Premier League match between Tottenham and Manchester United.

Social media users were outraged after police officials named Ogunyemi and sergeant Godwin Orji as the officers involved in the shooting.

In the case of the State of Lagos vs. Ogunyemi Olalekan, ID/9776C/2019, Justice Coker found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to life in prison with the condition that he serves a minimum of 25 years in prison.

On Thursday, when the hearing was resumed, Lagos State’s prosecutor, Jubril Kareem, made his presence known. The defense team was led by Abayomi Omotubora.

The judge also gave the former police officer a life term for manslaughter.

Olalekan was found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder.

The prosecution called seven witnesses to testify, while the defense only called two.

The pathologist, Dr. Oluwaseun Williams, testified that Johnson was shot six times.
