To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Community Shield, Liverpool came from behind to defeat Manchester City 3-1 on Sunday at the King Power Stadium.
After new signing Julian Alvarez had cancelled out Trent Alexander-sensational Arnold’s opener, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez scored late goals in front of the Reds fans.
A superb first-time effort from Alexander-Arnold from a good 20 yards gave Liverpool the lead after just 21 minutes of dominating the match.
When Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeepers Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher were injured, Erling Braut Haaland forced Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper to make a save before the Norwegian’s acrobatic attempt from close range missed.
A second-half appearance by Nunez and Alvarez at the King Power Stadium sparked a clamor for penalties from Reds supporters, who felt Ederson had handled the ball too lightly when Nunez went down.
When Alvarez scored City’s equalizer after Phil Foden’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper, it was initially disallowed before a long VAR review gave the Sky Blues the chance to celebrate.
When Nunez’s header struck Ruben Dias on his arm and Craig Pawson awarded a penalty, it was Liverpool supporters who called for the intervention of VAR. Ten minutes later Despite Ederson’s right-footed save, Salah stepped up and put Liverpool up by two goals.
When James Milner sent the ball into the box in the 87th minute, Nunez had an excellent opportunity to make it 3-0 for Liverpool, but the Uruguayan diverted his header into the back of the net to secure an overwhelming victory for Liverpool in the second half.
Despite the attention paid to Liverpool’s new strikers throughout the afternoon, Haaland still had enough time to hit the crossbar with a late effort from a few yards out before the celebrations began. You might also be interested to read Neymar Will Be Put On Trial For Alleged Transfer Violations
