The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has raised its costs, according to a Daily Trust article. The cost of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) was slightly raised by the exam board.
This was said by Mr. Patrick Areghan, Head of the Council’s Nigeria National Office, on Thursday while he was touring a marking facility in Abuja. He claimed that instead of paying N13,950 anymore, each student taking the exam must now pay N18,000.
He pointed out that the naira to dollar exchange rate was a misery and that an increase in fees was required so that the council could serve Nigerian children effectively.
“That slight increase is necessary for us to provide better services. Examiners are now satisfied because we can raise their marking fees thanks to this slight rise. According to him, the money was actually used to pay the examiners so that we could appease them and enable them to perform their jobs more effectively.
Areghan responded to the question of whether the council intended to use computer-based testing (CBT) in the administration of its exams by saying that CBT would only be possible if the government provided the necessary infrastructure.
He claimed that WAEC administers exams for more than 20,000 secondary schools nationwide in 76 courses, thus it would be challenging to employ CBT for those exams given that a candidate might only present eight subjects.
Speaking, Mr. Pateh Bah, Registrar of Council, expressed his pleasure with the work done by examiners at the center to ensure the quick distribution of its results. According to Bah, the examiners completed their job within the 45-day window set forth for the publication of the results.
Additionally, the Federal Government was enlisted by the council’s chairman, professor Ato Essuman, to aid the council acquire a superior printing device for use in providing services.
