This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will have the world premiere of “Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman,” the most recent film from Netflix and EbonyLife.

The play “Death and the King’s Horseman,” written by Wole Soyinka, is adapted into a film in the Yoruba language, and it will be shown as a Special Presentation at the festival.

The first movie in Yoruba to achieve this feat will be “Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman.”

The adaptation will be filmed in 2021 under the direction of Blood Sisters’ Biyi Bandele, with renowned Nollywood star Odunlade Adekola playing the major role. The film also stars Ajoke Silva, Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, Deyemi Okanlawon, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Mark Elderkin, Jenny Stead, Langley Kirkwood, Kevin Ushi, Drikus Volschenk, Fares Boulos “Oyibo Rebel,” and Jenny Stead.

The plot of Bandele’s adaption is based on the Nobel Prize winner’s 1975 drama, which is set in an ancient Yoruba city and concerns English colonial officers who intervene to prevent the Elesin Oba from committing ritual suicide after the death of his king.

The owner of EbonyLife, Mo Abudu, revealed the TIFF premiere on her Instagram page.

Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman will make its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2022, EbonyLife Films and Netflix are happy to announce. The first Yoruba language film to achieve so is Elesin Oba, which will compete in the prestigious Special Presentation category.

Prof. Wole Soyinka, who in 1986 earned the first Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to an African author, wrote the original version of Death and the King’s Horseman as a stage drama. One of Soyinka’s works has never before been adapted into a full-length motion picture. Biyi Bandele wrote and directed the film adaption.
