Ogunjimi Tolulope, popularly referred to as Jimmy T, a student from the Ondo State university of science and Technology, Okitipupa, (OSUSTECH), writes to unravel the mysteries behind the exorbitant fees raised by the school management.
Jimmy T, the previous SUG Public Relation Officer, (PRO) has expressed his view and drawn our attention in memory lane. He writes to disentagle and disclose the journey so far, how some people had fought, struggled, stood, agitated, slayed, and betrayed the interest of the Students.
It is a piece that has really shaked tables, revealing the operations of the past government.
Jimmy T writes;
The Journey so far
“when the purpose of a thing is not known then abuse is inevitable”
For a while now I’ve been in my shell, abandoned my pen and observing like an eagle but the recent happenings demand me to come out pop and plain.
Permit me to give thanks to the most merciful, most gracious, maker of mankind, and the master of the day of judgement for sparing our lives till this moment if not we’d have been lost and forgotten.
It is also important I appreciate all our gallant comrades, media men and all agitating students, you all have done absolutely well and our prayer is may Almighty God reward us bountifully.
From history page let me coin some few things, we need flash back to the days of Dr Olusegun Mimiko the then executive governor of the state when Ondo State University of Science and Technology(OSUSTECH) school fees was 100000 for indigene and 150000 for non indigene.
At this point the entire students of the university were no longer comfortable with this fee and as such stood gallantly for reduction.
The struggle for reduction started even SUs join as they all saw reasons to fight because there was no longer alternative to paying the exorbitant fee.
The school was shut down for 6months after the protest in Okitipupa and Akure yet they never gave up as the goal for nothing but reduction.
The school was reopened after 6 months and the school fees was reduced to 70000 across board coupled with student union government(SUG) that we have today to be our voice.
Today so many of us are enjoying the dividend of the then struggle and we have a union today because of their labor which implies those before us in their own little way has made life lot more easier for us but the question is “can we handover what we have at hand to the coming generations and they’ll celebrate us? “
Two years back when Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu the executive governor of the state came on board, some delegates from the state came to OSUSTECH to meet with the union leaders under Com Mawonomi Samuel under which I served as the honorable representing geophysics constituency asking them the things we need in OSUSTECH.
They also stylishly asked “what if your school fees is increased what will you do?” and Com Mawonomi said he will lead a massive protest.
Not long after then the school fees was increased for freshers alone, the then SU under the watch of Com Mawonomi kicked against it and he was told he can’t fight for freshers as they’re not matriculated yet and as such not yet students besides they all saw the school fees structure before they came on board but note the fee was increased after the innocent students have paid acceptance fee.
Ever since then the affected students have been crying for reduction as the fee is too exorbitant.
After series of consultations so they believe when they become staylites they’ll pay 70000 but unfortunately the reverse is the case.
Com Oladunmoye Kingsley led government then came on board which I served as the PRO and another chapter begins.
We came on board with the issue of school fees still on ground and the students were still clamouring for reduction.
So the journey towards meeting the needs of the students begins.
Let me withdraw my dancing pen here as I take a deep breath.
Wait on the next release as I pause here.
Thank you for taking your time to read.
