After her nudity video leaked online, Kannywood actress Safiya Yusuf talked openly about her battle with depression and attacks both online and offline.
Safiyya said in a recent interview with BBC Hausa that she did not distribute the nude film herself and that her friends and other people who have access to her phone are to blame for doing so.
Although she acknowledged recording the naked video by herself, she insisted that she never shared it. She also asserted that she is not a lesbian as some have claimed.
After the film surfaced, Safiyya, who was fired from a popular Arewa24 movie series, spoke about her trauma. She claimed she was stoned by a person who felt betrayed, that she was the target of cyberattacks, and that she was forced to spend three months inside.
“These days, 70% of women have these kinds of films on their phones. While many women do it, it is only done for enjoyment and not to post on social media. I’m unable to identify the individual who posted the video, but I can only assume that one of my friends or associates stole my phone. I give them my phone, thus.
“When I saw the video and how it became so popular all across the world, I was quite astonished. In fact, I was unable to stand when I first heard the news. I faced many difficulties, and I was made fun of.
At one point, someone even stoned me in response to that video. I had to stay inside for three months without venturing near our front gate.
The actress also disclosed that she almost deleted her social media accounts after receiving harsh online criticism, but her family persuaded her to accept it as fate.
