For almost 300 years, John Wesley’s New Room has served the neighborhood as a multi-use structure, including housing a museum.

In light of Bristol Pride, the Broadmead chapel has now declared it will start conducting same-sex marriages.

The Methodist church voted in favor of same-sex marriage in 2021, making it the second-largest religious group in the UK to do so.

The motion demanded that the phrase “a lifelong union in body, mind, and spirit of two persons who freely enter it” be added to the definition of marriage.

Beginning on Thursday, preachers will be able to marry LGBTQ+ couples residing in Bristol in the structures owned by the New Room. The motion received a unanimous yes vote.

The Church of England does not currently permit same-sex unions.
“This decision to register John Wesley’s New Room as a venue for same-sex marriages is the next step in our path of allyship with the LGBTQIA+ community,” said Reverend Mandy Briggs, the chapel’s education officer and responsible authorized person.

“This registration feels like the logical next step” given that Christians at Bristol Pride have been holding services at the chapel since 2018.

The church will also hosting a rainbow service for LGBTQ+ Christians to commemorate 2022’s festivities and help them to “enjoy Pride through their religion.”

On July 9, after the service, participants are encouraged to dress in purple, bring signs, and join the Pride march from Castle Park.
