Three former teaching members at a California school are facing manslaughter charges in the 2018 death of a teenage boy with autism who passed away after being held face-first on the ground for an hour.

Max Benson, 13, was a student at the Guiding Arms School in El Dorado Hills when he allegedly became violent and was restrained by three staff members.

According to PEOPLE, the three defendants—identified as Kimberly Wohlwend, a specific education instructor, Starrane Meyers, the former principal of the El Dorado Hills-based school, and Cindy Keller—have all entered not-guilty pleas.

Three Years After Prison Fees for Boy’s Death, Indictment

Three years after criminal charges were brought against the university and three instructors for felony counts of involuntary manslaughter back in 2019, the Guiding Arms School itself was indicted on July 15 on one count of the same crime.

According to PEOPLE, Max passed just two days after being detained and having his face pushed for an hour on the college floor on November 28, 2018.

When the youngster finally became unconscious, a trainer performed CPR on him. He was brought back to life and taken to UC Davis Medical Heart, where he pass away.


Complete Closure of School Following Death After 25 years of operation

Following Max’s death, the California Department of Education temporarily stopped certification for universities that specialize in teaching kids with special needs.

After operating for more than 25 years, it was eventually completely shut down. According to PEOPLE, a brand-new faculty already functions there.
