The six-week-old walkout by employees at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was called off on Monday.

The employees are part of the Nigerian Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN).

During the union convention on Monday morning, Idzi Isua, the vice-chairman of the union, verified the development.

According to Mr. Isua, the union decided to call off the strike after reaching a settlement with management.

On June 21, the union went on strike in protest over, among other things, inadequate welfare benefits and unpaid promotion arrears.

According to Mr. Isua, the union has long-standing disagreements with NAFDAC management about employee welfare.

He claimed that the agency’s substandard wage structure, which has no associated allowances, has negatively impacted the staff.

According to Mr. Isua, the union and management discussed adding additional allowances to support the wage that was paid.

He claimed that in addition to the monthly salary, they had also decided to incorporate a regulatory and hazard allowance.

He stated, “This has been going on for two years, but it failed, so we went on strike.

According to Mr. Isua, the union called off the strike after coming to a favorable deal with management.

He said that the 30% hazard allowance that had been asked had been authorized and paid for the entire year.

He mentioned that the management had also kept its pledge to compensate each agency retiree who had received “the long service award.”

“As a result of this strike, management has paid the retirees who were eligible for that allowance for the previous year and will pay out that for 2022 before the end of the year.

He added, “We also have unpaid arrears on promotions from 2018 to 2021, and this also contributed to the strike.

He said that the 2018 to 2020 period had been approved by the NAFDAC management and the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

In order to clear that of 2021 by the end of this year’s September, he remarked, “We have an arrangement with the management.”
