Who is Ibukun Awosika?
Born Bilkisu Abiodun Motunrayo Omobolanle Adekola, Ibukun Awosika is a Nigerian business woman, motivational speaker, and an author. She was former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria. She was born on on December 24, 1962.
Ibukun Awosika Education
Ibukun completed her primary and secondary school education at St. Paul’s African Church Primary School, Lagos and Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba respectively before she proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University where she graduated with a BSc in Chemistry. She had initially wanted to study Architecture and also ended up taking elective courses in Accounting.
She holds post graduate and MBA certificates upon the completion of several business programmes at the Lagos Business School and IESE Business School – University of Navarra.
Ibukun Awosika Career
Awosika was the first woman to lead the First Bank of Nigeria a prominent Tier 1 bank in 2015. She served as chairman of Kakawa Discount House Limited, FBN Capital Limited, and FBN Life Assurance Limited. She also served on the National Job Creation Committee’s board and the board of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NJCC).
She is a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network, a participant in the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, a director on the board of the Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund, and the co-founder and former chair of the Board of Trustees of Women in Management, Business, and Public Service.
While on her compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps service (NYSC) in Kano State, Ibukun Awosika worked as an audit trainee at Akintola Williams & Co. which later became Deloitte, but returned home after the service and joined Alibert Nigeria Ltd., a furniture company, as showroom manager.
In her quest to be independent, she established a furniture manufacturing company called Quebees Limited in 1989 before it evolved into The Chair Centre Limited and later SOKOA Chair Centre Limited following a venture merge with SOKOA S.A and Guaranty Trust Bank in 2004.
In 2011, she co-founded the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre, a career centre established to checkmate the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.
On September 7, 2015, Ibukun became the first woman to be appointed Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria following the resignation of Prince Ajibola Afonja.
Ibukun Awosika is member of IESE’s International Advisory Board (IAB). She also sits on the board of Digital Jewel Limited and Cadbury Nig Plc.
Ibukun Awosika And Binance Advisory Board
On Thursday, September 22, Awosika joined Binance’s advisory board to help the cryptocurrency exchange manage some of the most urgent regulatory concerns the industry is now dealing with.
According to a news release, the popular crypto exchange has been encouraging nations to take the initiative and embrace an economic future in which cryptocurrencies and blockchain will play a significant role.
“We are aware that licenses and rules will necessitate much discussion and negotiation, but the trend is clear—more and more nations want to establish a promising future,” the report stated.
Speaking about her selection, Awosika said, “The transparency and accountability with which Binance seeks to deliver services to its clients are impressive. As a company of the future, Binance must continue to evolve, build and find solutions in real-time. I am proud to play a role as a member of its Global advisory board and to be a part of truly transforming the web3 economy.”
Ibukun Awosika Husband And Children
Ibukun Awosika is married to Abiodun Awosika with whom she has three children.
She is an ordained pastor and founder of Christian Missionary Fund; a faith-based organization that provides educational and medical supplies to gospel missionaries across Nigeria.
She attends Fountain Of Life Church.
