On Friday, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja High Court in Lagos sentenced Taiwo Oreagba, a former attorney for singer Naira Marley, to two years in prison.
Oreagba, who once defended Naira Marley in a case involving alleged credit card theft, received a two-year prison term for asking for a bribe of 4,000,000 naira.
The judge remarked that Oreagba had not refuted the contents of a voice recording in which she was heard boasting about using the four million naira to bribe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) personnel to grant her client a “soft landing.”
Justice Taiwo denounced the convict’s assertion that she could influence judges assigned to cases in the Lagos State Judiciary as well as law enforcement officials. On November 12, 2020, Oreagba was initially charged by the EFCC with the alleged crime before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offenses Court in Ikeja, Lagos.
To a two-count charge involving an alleged corrupt demand and acquiring the N4m under false pretense, she entered a not guilty plea.
